NEW POSITION ANNOUNCED! We are very pleased to announce that Dr Choi is joining our Association as Director of Classical Martial Arts. This role will be our authority on Classical Martial Arts, support in development of new materials within HGMS® and be part of our strategic team.
Dr. Bok Kyu Choi's academic journey began at Sogang University in Seoul, where he initially pursued a degree in physics. However, his deep passion for martial arts soon led him to change direction, culminating in both a master's and doctoral degree from Seoul National University.
Dr. Choi’s scholarly work is heavily influenced by the Muye Dobo Tongji (The Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts). In his studies, he not only delved into the technical aspects of martial arts but also explored their broader humanistic and cultural significance.
Although he identifies as a traditionalist, Dr. Choi critically engages with many of the nationalist perspectives commonly found in the Korean martial arts community. His expertise in translating and modernizing classical texts has positioned him as a thought leader in the field, and he has held prominent roles as both a senior researcher and professor. Now based in the Netherlands, Dr. Choi chairs both the Korean Institute for Martial Arts (www.kimainstitute.org) and the Dutch Sibpalki Association (www.sibpalki.eu).
Among his many scholarly contributions, his works Koreanization of Japanese Swordsmanship and The Fist Bible: Translation with Notes of the Fist Chapter from Jixiao Xinshu stand out. The latter earned recognition for scholarly excellence from The National Academy of Sciences of Korea in 2019.
Dr. Choi is an active voice in academic discourse, contributing numerous articles and engaging with audiences worldwide through social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. His dedication to bridging the gap between tradition and modernity continues to shape the evolving dialogue surrounding Korean martial arts.
